The Centre for IMPACT’s collaborator in Afghanistan, HealthNet TPO, has taken significant steps to strengthen its research capacity, contributing to evidence-based health interventions that address pressing community needs. The organization’s dedication to research has not only enhanced healthcare delivery but also amplified Afghanistan’s voice on international platforms.
Empowering Research Capacity
To meet the growing demand for reliable health data, HealthNet TPO has established a dedicated research department. This strategic initiative fosters a culture of inquiry and enhances the organization’s ability to conduct high-quality research. The research team develops annual plans, conducts training workshops, and has obtained Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification, aligning with international ethical standards for research involving human participants.
Training the Next Generation of Researchers
The research department prioritizes capacity building through specialized training programs. A Research Methodology Training Workshop equipped professional staff from Kabul Mental Health Hospital with essential research skills, while a Qualitative Research Methodology Workshop strengthened the internal research team’s capacity. Additionally, HealthNet TPO conducted a Research Methodology Training for PM+ Master Trainers and Research Officers, further expanding the organization’s research expertise.
Improving Healthcare Services: The Crucial Role of Research
In November 2024, HealthNet TPO took a significant step forward by presenting its research at the 14th International Scientific Conference at the French Medical Institute for Mother and Children (FMIC). This event provided a global platform for researchers to showcase their work and exchange ideas with experts in the field.
Dr Sayed Murtaza S. Hofiani, Research Coordinator at HealthNet TPO, emphasized the importance of sharing research on international platforms. Working closely with leadership and programme managers, he encouraged the research team to submit abstracts for the conference. As a result, ten team members submitted abstracts. Seven were then selected for oral presentations, while three were accepted for poster presentations. Notably, for the first time, the conference featured a dedicated session on mental health and well-being, highlighting the increasing recognition of this crucial field.
HealthNet TPO researchers presented studies on vital health topics affecting communities in Afghanistan, including mental health, tuberculosis, Blood Donation Knowledge, and community education:
- Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Blood Donation Among Students – Refat Hanifi, Research Program Officer, Centre for IMPACT
- Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices Toward Tuberculosis – Nagina Alimi, Diabetes Research Manager, Centre for IMPACT
- Assessment of MHPSS Learning Needs Among Community Health Workers – Masoom Khan Khadim, MHPSS Research Manager, Centre for IMPACT
Recognition and Achievements
Presenters received certificates of excellence, with oral presenters awarded special mementos. Dr Sayed Murtaza S. Hofiani, HealthNet TPO’s Research Coordinator, played a vital role in mentoring the team and was honored with two awards. He also chaired the conference’s scientific committee and has joined the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) UK reviewer community—a prestigious role supporting global health research.
