Global health research, while aiming to improve lives worldwide, often perpetuates existing power imbalances.
Funding and leadership are disproportionately concentrated in the Global North, leaving women scholars in the Global South facing significant barriers. This disparity demands urgent action and a fundamental shift in how we conduct research.
In advance of International Women’s Day on 8th March, we are excited to highlight a new initiative led by Dr Saima Afaq within the Centre for IMPACT. The project, Global Equity in Research: A Gender-Inclusive Approach, is funded by the Wellcome Trust under the Valuing Voices for Equitable and Responsible Research project. The Global Equity in Research team will however gather experiences from researchers within the Centre for IMPACT to improve their understanding of the barriers to women in research in Pakistan and Afghanistan, continue to foster equitable North-South partnerships, and build inclusive research practices.

This project aims to deeply understand the lived experiences of women scholars in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and identify and address the systemic barriers they face. The project will develop a toolkit that can be used by future global health researchers to ensure equity in research, and develop a strong, actionable strategy that enables researchers to embed decolonization and gender equity into the core of their research practices.
