The cardiovascular disease research theme builds on previous work on hypertension, medication access, community-based cardiovascular disease cohorts, and school-based approaches for childhood obesity, in Pakistan.
It aims specifically to:
- Study the implementation of a community-based hypertension control intervention
- Co-create and evaluate the (cost-)effectiveness of a workplace-based programme for reducing risk of cardiovascular disease
- Assess the feasibility of school-based interventions for addressing childhood obesity
A hybrid type III cluster-randomised controlled trial testing implementation strategies for scaling up a proven multicomponent hypertension intervention in rural Pakistan.
Dr Shazia, a physician from BHU Karam Khan Nizamani in Matiari, shares how the project is benefiting women in her community:
Working with parents, students, and teachers to co-create an evidence-based intervention to reduce the risk factors of NCDs in school-going children.
This project will co-create evidence-based interventions for reducing the risk of CVD in occupational groups.

Why is this research important?
A steep rise in the number of people affected by cardiovascular diseases in Pakistan, alongside a lack of national strategy to monitor and manage cardiovascular diseases and low implementation of preventative strategies, calls for an urgent need for strengthening health systems and multi-sectoral collaborations.
